Repair or replacement: start with the condition
Photograph the full driveway and close-ups of cracks, uneven sections, broken edges and places where water collects. Note whether the condition has changed and whether earlier repairs are visible. These observations help frame an assessment; a photograph alone does not establish the cause or the right repair.
Ask whether a limited repair, replacement of selected sections or full removal deserves review. A surface blemish and a section that has moved are different questions. If someone recommends replacement, ask which conditions support that recommendation and what preparation is included beneath the new concrete.
Measure the work, including the connections
Draw a simple outline from the garage to the street. Separate the main parking area, narrow side strips, walkway crossings and the driveway apron. Mark what stays and what comes out.
For example, a rectangular area 20 feet wide and 30 feet long is 600 square feet. That is a measurement example, not a price or a complete scope. Curves, flared entrances, steps and separate sections need their own measurements. Final quantities and construction details need confirmation at the site.
Photograph the garage threshold, street connection, curb, sidewalk and nearby drains. Note vehicles that use the driveway, including heavier vehicles. The estimator needs to review these connections and intended loads before specifying the work; copying the old driveway's details is not a substitute.
Check the address and permit responsibility
A Houston mailing address does not by itself identify the governing jurisdiction. Confirm the property address, any affected public right-of-way and who will check requirements before work begins. Share HOA requirements when applicable.
The Houston Permitting Center's permit directory lists a residential driveway permit for new construction, replacement and extensions. Confirm the requirements for your actual project, including any sidewalk or curb work, and put permit and inspection responsibility in the quote.
Understand what changes the cost
Two driveways with the same area can require different work. Price depends on removal difficulty, existing thickness and reinforcement, loading space, disposal, excavation, preparation, placement access and the specified finish. Unexpected conditions should have a written change process rather than an assumed allowance.
Ask whether demolition includes cutting clean boundaries at retained concrete, loading debris and hauling it away. Identify nearby landscaping, irrigation and surfaces that need protection. State whether restoration outside the concrete work is included or excluded.
Plan access while the driveway is closed
Before demolition, arrange alternate parking and a safe route to the house. Tell the estimator about garage access needs, deliveries, mobility needs, pets and work-hour restrictions. Identify where trucks can stand and whether the street or sidewalk must remain accessible. If several household members use the driveway, agree on parking and access needs before finalizing the plan.
Your preparation list should identify who moves vehicles and belongings, handles HOA paperwork, provides access and coordinates necessary utility checks. Do not assume gate removal, irrigation repairs or lawn restoration comes with the concrete price.
Compare the written scope
- Removal limits, verified dimensions and retained sections.
- Excavation, base preparation and handling of unsuitable conditions.
- Project-specific concrete, thickness, reinforcement, joints and finish.
- Garage, sidewalk and street connections, with drainage conditions reviewed.
- Protection, haul-off, cleanup, permits and inspection responsibilities.
- Schedule assumptions, exclusions and approval of changes.

Get reopening instructions before the pour
ACI describes curing as controlling moisture and temperature while concrete develops its properties. Ask for project-specific care instructions and separate guidance for walking, parking and heavier loads. Appearance alone does not establish readiness, and one universal reopening date will not fit every mix and condition.
