The problem nobody sees until the grid drops
A standby generator can pass every mechanical inspection and still fail when you need it — because diesel that sits in a tank for months quietly degrades. Industry studies commonly attribute the majority of standby-generator failures to fuel-related issues rather than the engine itself. The tank is the weak link, and it fails silently.
Three ways stored diesel goes bad
1. Water
Water is diesel's first enemy. It enters through condensation (warm days, cool nights — very much a Houston pattern), loose fittings, and deliveries. Water sinks to the bottom of the tank, right where the pickup draws from. It corrodes tank walls and injector components and — critically — it's the fuel that microbes need to live.
2. Microbial growth ("diesel bug")
Where water and diesel meet, bacteria and fungi colonize the interface. The Gulf Coast's heat and humidity make it worse. The colony forms a dark, slimy biomass that clogs filters, fouls injectors, and produces acids that corrode the tank. A generator can go from "full tank" to "won't carry load" without anyone touching it.
3. Sludge and asphaltene fallout
Diesel is not chemically stable forever. Over months, heavier compounds (asphaltenes) drop out of suspension and settle as sludge. Modern ultra-low-sulfur diesel and biodiesel blends can be more prone to this. The result is the same: a filter-clogging layer at the bottom of the tank, pulled straight into the engine the moment it fires under load.
The warning signs
- Dark, cloudy, or hazy fuel instead of clear amber.
- A sour or rotten smell at the fill.
- Filters clogging faster than the run hours justify.
- A visible layer or "mat" at the tank bottom on inspection.
- The generator starts fine on a test but struggles under real load.
What to do about it
- Keep the tank full. A full tank leaves less air space for condensation to form. Half-empty tanks breathe moisture every night.
- Test periodically. A visual water/sediment check, and a pulled sample when warranted, catches problems while they're cheap.
- Polish the fuel. Fuel polishing circulates the diesel through filtration to remove water, microbes, and sediment — restoring stored fuel without draining the tank. On larger tanks this is done by our licensed fuel partners.
- Exercise the generator under load on a schedule so problems surface on your terms, not during an outage.
